Abstract

After World War I, Turkey and Iran started a defensive
modernization in order to build up national states similar to the European
countries. The key elements of this process were: decreasing the influence
of religion on the society, imposing an ethnic based nationalism and
endorsing women’s involvement in the public sphere. However, the reforms
promoted by both states did not affect men’s privileges, limiting women to
their traditional roles.
