Abstract

Historically, the multiple and varied binary logics have encouraged
the production of a Western identity which unveiled epistemic, linguistic
and sex-gender hierarchies. However, since the 1980s, different voices
emerged as a critic to the mainstream theories of International Relations.
Those contributed to the elaboration of a new decolonialist discourse,
which focused on how the eurocentric origins of the discipline excluded
the knowledge of the non-western world. Therefore, the encounter
between decolonialism and feminism generated changes in the way people
understood the life of women and the liberal feminist perspective was
accused of being hegemonic, ethnocentric and universalist. Altogether, the
aim of this article is to analyze the use of the veil (hijab) in Iran from decolonial
feminist approach and contrast them with liberal (and hegemonic) feminist
approaches.
